Randy Gerke’s Outdoor Survival Guide blends easy to read, well organized text on what to do in a survival situation with straightforward instructions. He takes you from the probable psychological state you may find yourself, to building a shelter and foraging for food, through to stumbling upon a dangerous animal and everything in between. Not only should every outdoor enthusiast, scout, and nature loving family read and own this book, but everyone from the occasional hiker to those who drive a car. Outdoor Survival Guide should be slipped into every backpack and stowed in every glovebox. If read before any outdoor adventure, Gerke’s clear-cut, candid advice on precautions and preparations could prove to be the key ingredients to surviving a life-threatening situation.

This book is a must for emergency preparedness kits. Not only does it address the physical skills that will save you in a survival situation, but also speaks to the psychological survival skills which will determine if you will hold on long enough to use them. It is written in a voice that accompanies you as if you have your own seasoned, survival guide talking to you. It is very simple, unintimidating, and basic. It is an excellent reference for identifying plants, knowing what to do with available food, building shelters, following maps, using a compass, how to deal with a wild animal, how to deal with injury, etc. The illustrations are an excellent addition in teaching the steps for each skill. This is a must-have resource not only for adventurous outdoor types, but for anyone that lives in an area where a natural disaster could occur—floods, hurricanes, storms, earthquakes, etc. I’m giving one to everyone in my extended family for Christmas.

I’ll be honest, “Outdoor Survival Guide” by Randy Gerke is probably one of the best books on wilderness survival that I have in my library. Many of the other books I’ve read on this subject tend to use a lot of “filler” and that is really the last thing you need to be wading through in the event of a real survival situation. I don’t think there is a single wasted word in this book. Every word, every section provides useful information that you might need in a situation.
The book is divided into chapters based on the topic, not like in some books where they are divided by type of environment. The first chapter “Art of Survival” should not only be read, but memorized prior to going on the trail. It lists types of survival responses, panic control, and how to assess a situation. If God forbid you find yourself in a survival situation that you did not intend to be in, you should at the very least know how you yourself will normally react. Are you going to be a leader? Proactive? Bewildered? What about the people you are planning to go with? Do you know their reaction?
Other chapters include shelters, food (from animals or plants), navigation, fire, water, signaling, injuries/illnesses, and dangerous environments. While all the chapters in the book are excellent, there is not a bad chapter in the bunch, the food from plants section is particularly well thought out. For the plants, it gives descriptions, habitats, uses, food, warnings (ie don’t confuse Cow Parsnip with Hemlock), and in the middle of the book there are several pages of photos of the plants mentioned which should help ease identification. In the animal chapter, not only does it mention how to trap the animal, but also how to clean, skin, and use the bone and how to save the blood. I would suggest not reading that chapter after dinner.
At ~230 pages and only weighing one pound, it’s a fairly standard sized paperback and about the right size to take on the trail. A few months ago, I reviewed another outdoor book “The Survival Handbook” which was an oversized, overweight book that was completely infeasible for a survival situation. In that review I stated “you might be better off bringing separate specialised books. They would be more effective and would probably consume less space.” I would like to change that just a tad, bring “Outdoor Survival Guide” instead, you will have almost all your bases covered (and much more effectively) and you would definitely use up less space. The only type I would suggest bringing as an additional book is if you are going into an environment that is not your typical woods, then certainly bring a survival guide on that particular environment in addition to this book as well.

Posted November 21, 2009, 3:53 PM EST: Outdoor Survival Guide by Randy Gerke is an outstanding overview of essential knowledge for anyone from novice outdoor enthusiasts to seasoned survivalists. The book is well organized and takes what could otherwise be dry and technical information and presents it in a very user-friendly and easily readable manner. Within each section, the skill sets are introduced in a linear progression so that each new skill presented builds off of something previously learned. This obviously comes from Gerke’s extensive background in teaching wilderness survival for many years. The book is outlined in a very practical way so that it is easy to either read through cover to cover, or search through by topic to quickly find relevant information. The abundance of included photographs and illustrations enhance the quality of written knowledge contained in the book, so that concepts can be learned easily and efficiently. Compared to many similar books on the market, I prefer the simplicity of Outdoor Survival Guide. It does not bombard the reader with too much information, but at the same time makes sure to cover all the essential survival skills necessary to stay safe. I recommend it for anyone who spends time outdoors.

“Outdoor Survival Guide” by Randy Gerke, is brilliantly simple, clear, and applicable to most any survival situation. But more than this, it is a “Can Do” book. The author not only teaches essential skills, but also nurtures within the reader a spirit of confidence, pro-activity, and creativity in addressing the first, and perhaps the most deciding question in survival with a resounding: “Yes, I can do this?” Every household should have one. – Leslie Tucker
